Practical hedging support by training of volunteer hedgers.
Description
Keow Pennwydh or Penwith Hedges raised and developed awareness of the heritage value of Cornish hedges in the Penwith landscape, building relationships within and between communities, and training volunteers and farmers in the practice of Cornish hedging so that heritage, people, farm businesses and communities can benefit. This was achieved through the following activities:
-
Provision of training to farmers and community volunteers to restore and repair Cornish hedges; and also of wildlife recording volunteers to identify and record the flora and fauna of Penwith's hedges
-
Raising awareness within both farming and and the local community of the heritage and conservation value of Cornish hedges through the delivery of workshops, events and training; including our Virtual Hedge Week and a focus on Cornish Hedging at the St Buryan Rally 2022.
-
Raising the profile of Cornish Hedging as a traditional craft, including working with Heritage Crafts and the Guild of Cornish Hedges to create pre-apprenticeships in hedging.
-
Support the tradition of Penwith gates by raising awareness and funding new gates in the traditional style
The project was delivered across the Penwith Landscape Partnership area (see here for a map) with a priority on Cornish hedges identified as in need of repair or restoration. This project was led by our Penwith Hedges officer and Ecologist, plus support from our Farm Environment Officer. Volunteer hedging sessions were led by our Practical Tasks Officer. The Cornwall Wildlife Trust were the led partner.
